Harrington Jacket Yves Saint Laurent

Worn since 1998

JAMES WESTON, PARIS FRANCE

Could you introduce yourself?
My name is James Weston and I'm a photographer living and working in Paris. I’m originally from a small coastal town, east of London.

Could you introduce us to this piece? Where does it come from? How old is it?
This is a YSL unlined Harrington style jacket, i bought it sometime in the mid-late 90s, probably around 98.

Did it belong to someone else before you? Did you buy it for yourself? Why did you buy it? How did you find it?
I think I bought it for myself. at the time I would save up any money I would have, and buy various pieces from YSL, Burberry, Ralph Lauren etc…but I particularly loved YSL. I lived about an hour on the train from London at the time, so every now and then I would go there and buy things like this.

Do you remember the first time you wore it?
I don’t specifically remember the first time I wore it, but I wore it, and still wear it so much, that I'm sure many memories are probably in this!

What are your memories of this piece?
My main memory is more of the times, I grew up skateboarding and riding BMX, and there was definitely a ‘dress code’ to those scenes. Pieces like this were certainly not part of it, they were worn more by the raver types. You had a small in-between category of older indie types who might wear a Harrington, but these brands were ridiculed really within BMX. So I had this mix mash wardrobe of skate brands and designer brands. Nowadays it's much more ‘anything goes’ with brands like Palace etc.

Are there any signs of wear? Have you ever repaired this piece?
It’s still in pretty good condition, just slightly faded.

When do you usually wear it? Do you remember the last time you wore it?
Whenever the weather is mild and I want something loose and comfortable. The last time I wore it was as soon as I got it back after De Bonne Facture photographed it for this Patina article.
