Italian Boiled Wool
November 14th, 2023
Traditionnally used to make warm clothing, boiled wool is a textile that is available in woven or knitted versions.
Having appeared in the Middle Ages, particularly in the European Alpine regions, this fabric, used to make coats or blankets, protected from freezing temperatures.
Initially, as it names implies, the woven wool was boiled in order to loosen its fibers, and "fulled", meaning compressed, in order to felt it. The fibers mesh into one another, until the initial weave interweaves and fades, giving boiled wool the density and texture that defines it. The fabric was then softened then washed with a clay used as a natural soap.
Boiled wool is still considered a go-to fabric when temperatures drop. More flexible and textured than felt, it offers insulating and windproof properties thanks to its tightly-packed fibers, which complement the natural properties of wool.
We entrusted a specialist atelier in Tuscany to produce our De Bonne Facture boiled wool. The South American farms from which this wool has been obtained are guaranteed Mulesing-free.
For this edition 21, we are including it in a range of garments: Overshirt, Traveler Jacket, Zipped Mechanician Blouson, Hoodie and Half-Zip Pullover.
