Ratine wool cloth

Ratine wool cloth

EDITION 9

February 19th, 2018

« Ratine » is the French name of a specific wool cloth that has been brushed to give it a fluffy and curly aspect that makes the fabric more durable and resistant to weather.

This operation stems from a very old know-how that was formerly handmade, apparently using a stick or thistles. Following that, the process was mechanized with a special machine.

At the end of the XIXth century, Florentine men started cutting coats out of a “ratine” regional cloth called Casentino, that was initially worn by monks, coachmen, and Tuscan mountain dwellers.

With this edition 9, we have selected for our coats and jackets a ratinated Italian virgin wool from a Biella specialist. It comes in navy blue and camel, and its authentic and warm texture will slowly acquire character with time.

Tropical wools or "cold wools" are fabrics made of worsted wool, with a light structure, and woven with a lesser thread count than usual. They are also breathable, thanks to their canvas weave that lets the air go by. Lastly, the tension that is given to the yarns gives the fabric less tendency to crease or wrinkle.
