Could you introduce yourself?
My name is David Kayitana Lui, I was born in South Africa but I grew up in Norway, of Rwandan descent.
I’m currently completing my degree in Strategic Human Resources Management. I work as a freelance content creator and consultant. I have a soft penchant for beautifully made objects, clothing, art, design, and generally craftsmanship to be specific.
Could you introduce us to this piece? Where does it come from? How old is it?
These are my beloved and beautiful aged Sebagos, a true testimony of how well-made things age with grace. I bought them 8 years ago in London if I am not mistaken.
Did it belong to someone else before you? Did you buy it for yourself? Why did you buy it? How did you find it?
My father and uncle used to wear boat shoes, especially on our holidays but also whilst working in the garden, I remember how smooth and relaxed the shoes looked on them with anything casual such as shorts, jeans, and khakis.
Do you remember the first time you wore it?
The first time I wore these shoes, they were a pair that belonged to my father. They were in dark brown grain leather by the same brand. My dear mother bought them as a gift to him on our trip to the States. I believe I was 15, turning 16 at that time. At some point they became mine, not sure if it was voluntary, but a nice memory non?
What are your memories related to this piece?
Promenading around the city or while traveling, mowing my parent's lawn, hanging in the park with friends, and other festive activities. The memories are endless, but all are good ones.
Are there any signs of wear? Have you ever repaired this piece?
There are visible scars and tear on the shoes, from the patina of the leather and the tearing of the rubber soles from endless walks. I have switched out a few laces and applied cream wax to further their longevity, but ultimately there is an end to everything. It's time I acquire new ones that I hopefully get to wear for another decade with more memories along the way.
When do you usually wear it? Do you remember the last time you wore it?
I tend to wear them during spring and summer, I find them to be the perfect substitute for other shoes, especially when unlined sans socks. I last wore them during a trip to "Sørlandet" and "Nøtterøy" both, in my opinion, two destinations I refer to as "The Norway Riviera".
